“ONE BLUSTERY DAY” - Sunday June 22nd Blackley v Copley Parish Cup 3rd Rd As the title suggests the conditions at Blackley, well most of the North West for that matter were far from ideal for a game of cricket. Both teams must be congratulated for treating the shivering crowd to some superb cricket. Townsend won the toss and decided to bat on a strip that looked full of runs, or as they say in Slawit a “shirt-fronter.” But Copley’s opening bowlers had other idea’s, claiming early wickets leaving the home team struggling at 13 for 2. Opener for the day Thacker (75) and Copley old boy Taylor (48) steadied the ship seeing the score through to 99 before Taylor fell to his mate Goulden, whose appeal must be commended being heard in all parts above the 60 mph wind! Their personal duel ended 1-1, C.A.T smashing the spinner over “The Golden Fleece” for one of his maximums before his departure. Late order hitting by Townsend, Houldin, Holding and Greenwood saw Blackley post a gettable 217. Special mention must go to Thacker’s who battled the conditions to stroke five 4’s and three 6’s in his 75. Copley who have struggled with the bat of late got off to another poor start, slumping to 50 for 6 then 82 for 7, Blackley seemingly cruising to victory. Baldwin and Turner started a recovery, eventually putting on 110 for the 8th wicket, reducing the already shivering Blackley crowd to nervous wrecks! Copley required 15 an over off the last 5, but after one particularly wayward over from Houldin the target was reduced by 24! The Blackley fielders began to look somewhat aggitated until Jimmy Watson (4 for 35) returned to remove Turner (45) and break Copley’s stubborn resistance. With Baldwin and Marsland needing 15 off Houldin’s last over, Captain Fantastic had a word with the young, shell-shocked quicky, explaining that if he went for the full 15 he would never ball another, now’t like a bit of encouragement! Well the Batley Lad came up trumps and saved the game, only going for 6 runs, what a nickname HOUDINI! A brave chase by Copley fell just 9 runs short, the stand of Baldwin and Turner nearly pulled off a shock win considering that Copley were 82 for 7! Baldwin must get a mention, 4 wkts and 86 n.o. and still ended up on the losing side! A splendid afternoons cricket that even Whinnie the Pooh would have enjoyed! Blackley progress to the Semi-Final stages for the first time in 14 years.
